About
My name is Kyle Ambroff. I am a free software enthusiast (some would say zelot, I wouldn’t go that far) from Davis CA, in the USA. I work for a very cool company in Silicon Valey as a software release engineer. I don’t think I’m going to mention their name yet.
I’m a long time GNOME user and casual contributor. I’ve been using GNU/Linux as my primary desktop since 1998, and GNOME since about 2002. For most of that time I’ve been a Debian user, and sometimes Ubuntu as well.
My main interests are free software, and programming languages. I’m a huge fan of Common Lisp, Scheme and to a lesser extent, Python. I do have a soft spot for C though, but I’m ok with that, as long as we aren’t talking about C++ :-).
If you know me personally, you may have also noticed that I am a notoriously apposed to Ruby. I really need to post an article here to justify that… coming soon!
I’ve spent most of my professional career as one of two things:
- A web developer, building applications with PHP and Django
- A .NET developer (*sigh* I know it’s ironic)
As a side effect of my .NET work, I happen to know quite a lot about it. I need some memory eraser pills! I really need to write an article to justify this! At least there is Mono, which allowed me to avoid using Windows completely (well, aside from ocasionally testing in a virtual machine). I’m probably one of the only .NET developers you will ever meet that uses GNU Emacs and Autotools, and not Visual Studio.
Which reminds me, I’m also a *huge* GNU Emacs fan. I’ve been using it for quite a long time, and can’t immagine how much my wrists would hurt without it. Thanks you RMS!
Anyway, more to come later, this weblog stuff is all new to me!
